Toronto Escorts: Doctor admired for efforts

November 23rd, 2009 · No Comments

… You work with getting their life under control,” Buchanan said. “It’s a Catch-22 for lots of folks if they can’t afford medicine and their case worsens and they lose their income and wind up on the streets. We try to reverse that.”
The sadness comes from seeing patients who cannot seem to help themselves.
“I think what’s frustrating and tragic is we deal with lots of people, especially in the STD (sexually transmitted diseases) and TB (tuberculosis) clinic who are down on their luck and have made choices in their lives that are unthinkable — for the most part prostitutes and drug addicts,” she said. “We see them come back in over and over with issues related to their lifestyles. People are stuck in that lifestyle. We get to know them on a very personal level.”

Saturday interview: Afghan activist Malalai Joya
‘Bravest woman in Afghanistan’ spearheads anti-war movement

Malalai Joya, a former MP from Afghanistan, poses for a portrait in Toronto.
In Afghanistan ruling politicians have publicly called Malalai Joya a “prostitute,” “infidel,” “traitor” and “communist.”
Some, whom she calls “criminals,” “killers,” “warlords” and “mafia drug lords,” have threatened to rape her and, on four occasions, tried to kill her.
But overseas, the tiny 31-year-old political activist and former school teacher has been hailed as “the bravest woman in Afghanistan” and compared to Burma’s jailed democracy leader, Aung San Suu Kyi.
The youngest person elected to the Afghan parliament in 2005, she was expelled from the legislature two years later for repeatedly denouncing her enemies and calling parliament a “zoo” filled with corrupt criminals.

Toronto Escorts: Party guy takes Manhattan

Jah started organizing parties at Tunnel, USA and Danceteria. “I would get bands like Smashing Pumpkins and Pearl Jam to play for almost nothing,” he told me. “The drug abuse was insane back then. In the ’90s, New York was the Wild West. There was a crack and heroin epidemic, especially in the Lower East Side. I had a lot of friends involved in drugs. That scared me from trying. I was just enjoying the scene.”
In the years since his arrival, New York has become one of the safest cities in the US — a bit too safe for Jah. The ongoing gentrification of some neighbourhoods is making life hard for nightclubs.
He singles out the Meatpacking District as an example.
“We opened Lotus in 1999. At that time the Meatpacking District was filled with meatpackers, prostitutes and drug dealers. Slowly, the neighbourhood became cool, Pastis and designer boutiques opened. Streets became safer and safer.

Toronto Escorts: Out of Frame: Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans

November 20th, 2009 · No Comments

McDonagh becomes more and more unhinged as the movie progresses, as he owes more and more money to his bookie (the wonderfully slimy Brad Dourif), as his prostitute girlfriend (Eva Mendes) gets in trouble with organized criminals, and he fails to make sufficient progress in solving the murder of a family of Senagalese immigrants whose father was involved in the drug trade. Cage, who has made a career in recent years out of his scene-chewing excess, is given free reign by Herzog to play it as over the top as he wants; the result is a performance as deliriously nutso as his manic turn in Wild at Heart. Herzog, no stranger to bringing out the inner maniac in his leading men after so many films with Klaus Kinski, allows Cage to dance right up to the edge of self-mockery, and then tumble right on over.

Toronto Escorts: Good Bad fun

With or without the help of his also-using prostitute girlfriend (Eva Mendes, channeling her character from We Own The Night), McDonagh scores enough for 10 junkies, shaking down club kids, short-changing the evidence room drug bags, etc.

Toronto Escorts: Eva Mendes: ‘A Close-Up is So Overrated’

November 20th, 2009 · No Comments

Eva Mendes must have a thing for cops, because she burst on the scene as Denzel Washington’s mistress in Training Day, then served as a policeman’s love interest in films like Out of Time and We Own the Night. Suffice it to say, though, she’s never had an onscreen love affair like the one with Nicolas Cage’s loopy law enforcer in Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans. As a prostitute named Frankie, Mendes plays Cage’s only tether to something real, but since this is a Werner Herzog film, even the duo’s relative stability is skewed as can be.
A little while ago, Mendes sat down with Movieline to discuss just how out-there Lieutenant gets, but also found time to touch on the Silver Lake hipster scene and the allure of Sam Worthington and Keira Knightley.

Toronto Escorts: Review: Bad Lieutenant

November 20th, 2009 · No Comments

PLOT: New Orleans cop Terrence McDonagh (Nic Cage) slides into drug abuse after a back injury during Hurricane Katrina. He falls further and further into corruption as he accosts club goers, steals cocaine from his precinct and joins a gang of drug lords. He gambles to excess, he hallucinates iguanas. He clings to his prostitute girlfriend (Eva Mendes), he takes care of his alcoholic dad’s dog…there is a murder investigation in here somewhere as well.

I’m pretty sure this would have made total sense if I was on some of the drugs that McDonagh was taking. He’s screwing a call girl (though I don’t think anyone is going to argue with his choice of Eva Mendes, who seems to be the only normal thing in the film) and performs a monologue for her about his childhood discovery of a spoon. He likens it to pirate treasure that he’s lost. He finds it and gives his culinary treasure to his adored hooker. Yes, yes. Ve …

… Werner Herzog’s hallucinogenic film noir features Nicolas Cage in a brilliant performance that’s almost psychotic.Photograph by: Handout, Handout
Werner Herzog’s Byzantine and hallucinogenic film noir features Nicolas Cage in a brilliant performance that’s almost psychotic. He plays a drug-addicted policeman investigating a murder while trying to protect his prostitute girlfriend (Eva Mendes). He has visions of iguanas, and in the druggy, hypnotic world, so will you.
Starring: Nicolas Cage, Eva Mendes
Rating: Four and a half stars out of five
Werner Herzog has been involved in a lot of strange projects — he once threatened to eat his shoe if Errol Morris finished his movie about pet cemeteries, a wager whose upshot is recorded in the documentary Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe — but turning Nicolas Cage into an iguana stands as one of his greatest cinematic achievements.

Toronto Strip Clubs: Twilight fever: it gets its teeth into you

November 20th, 2009 · No Comments

Stewart is an intelligent young woman, and, as her work outside the Twilight zone attests, she is also an extremely bright talent. She can count two of Hollywood’s most accomplished film-makers, Jodie Foster (with whom she worked on Panic Room) and Sean Penn (who directed her in Into the Wild), as mentors, and she knows that the success of the Twilight series has afforded her a tremendous freedom. She has yet to reach 20 and she can already choose the projects she wants. Few teenage starlets are blessed with such luxury.
Between Twilight and New Moon she shot Welcome to the Rileys, a tough, gritty drama in which she plays a teenage stripper, while between New Moon and Eclipse she filmed the rock’n’roll biopic The Runaways, in which she stars as the eponymous band’s leader, Joan Jett. “The whole Twilight thing is kind of weird,” Stewart says, “and people have all these huge expectations, but it means that I can help to get a movie financed, and people will think, ‘Let’s go see Bella in that stripper movie’. I’m glad that it means I can do that movie, and do cool projects like The Runaways.”

Toronto Strip Clubs: Robert Pattinson Felt Like Male Stripper in New Moon

Robert Pattinson Felt Like Male Stripper in New Moon
Robert Pattinson felt like he was doing a “striptease” while shooting ‘Twilight Saga: New Moon’.
The British actor, who plays Edward Cullen in the vampire franchise which has taken the world by storm, felt completely overwhelmed when he had to film a scene where he strips off.
He told Parade.com, “I felt pretty goofy stepping out into the sunlight in front of 2,000 people in a town square, ripping my clothes off. I was essentially doing a striptease.
“But here’s the irony, it was also one of the moments where I’ve really felt closest to people’s attachment to Edward. There were so many extras in that scene who were ‘Twilight’ fans who had flown in just to be a part of it. It was quite uplifting and it was also very nerve-wracking.”
