Prostitution
The geography of European prostitution is changing. So says a report by Tampep, a body that supports migrant sex workers in Europe. In 2006, Russia was the most common country of origin for sex workers, followed by Ukraine and Romania. By 2008, the EU had expanded and the new EU member states Romania and Bulgaria were in the top three.
In older EU countries, 70 per cent of prostitutes are migrants, so the effects of the EU’s changing make-up are unsurprising. What is less expected is the report’s take on criminalising prostitutes‘ clients. New to the UK but already in place in Finland and Norway, the report calls such laws “legislation . . . [that] harms the very people it seeks to protect”, by driving parts of the industry underground. As the law is intended to help women who may have been trafficked, the body’s opinion is a significant, if worrying, addition to the debate.

The day after local police closed a decade-old murder probe, Toronto cold case detectives were in Windsor interviewing the same suspect about three murders in Toronto. On Tuesday, Windsor police charged Peter Dale MacDonald, already serving a life sentence for murder, with second-degree murder in the death of Michelle Charette, 40, in 2000. MacDonald, 51, is also a suspect in the murder of 19-year-old Byron Carr, of Charlottetown, two decades ago. Toronto police interviewed him on Wednesday as a suspect in the slayings of three prostitutes. MacDonald is already serving a life sentence for killing James Campbell in his Toronto home in April 2000. MacDonald was moving back and forth between Windsor and Toronto at the time of Ms. Charette’s murder.

Toronto Strip Clubs: Catholic bishops fear Olympics provide venue for more sex-trade trafficking
January 28th, 2010 · No Comments
The Episcopal Commission for Justice and Peace, part of the bishops association, says that groups involved in the struggle against human trafficking are worried that the Olympics could provide an opportunity for people who prey on the vulnerable to make money.
“The fact is that at some major sporting events, systems are often put in place to satisfy the demand for paid sex. Unfortunately, this is likely to be the case during the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver,” the bishops say in a letter released Wednesday.
“As pastors of the Catholic Church in Canada, we denounce human trafficking in all its forms, whether it is intended for forced labour (domestic, farm or factory work) or for sexual exploitation (whether it be prostitution, pornography, forced marriages, strip clubs, or other). We invite the faithful to become aware of this violation of human rights and the trivialization of concerns about prostitution,” the letter said.

… I was hoping that we would find the killer of Michelle before I died,” said George Charette, now living in McGregor. “It rehashes it all over again, but it gives you a real good feeling in your gut that the case is solved. It’d been bothering me. It’s funny how it goes. I’d been dreaming about Michelle quite a bit. In this last year, I’d see her come to the door, then just drift away. Something was telling me that something was coming up.”
Police are bringing MacDonald back to Windsor from Kingston Penitentiary for a court appearance on Thursday. He’s behind bars in Kingston for the second-degree murder of James Campbell, 63, a retired meat plant worker found strangled in his Toronto home. MacDonald is also suspected in a homicide on Prince Edward Island, where he’s originally from, as well as the murders of three Toronto prostitutes. Police weren’t commenting on those cases Tuesday.

Toronto Adult Entertainment: Christian minsitries confront human trafficking at the Winter Olympics
January 25th, 2010 · No Comments
Several Christian ministries are making a huge push to confront the problem of human trafficking. Expectations are that with the thousands of visitors to Vancouver during the Olympics, the number of prostitutes in the city will double. Many of the prostitutes are little more than sex slaves used as human flesh to enrich the pimps and organized crime behind the scenes.
