It’s funny in a knowing way, a comedy about a boy who must overcome the bad decisions of his mother (Jean Smart) and her insensitive boyfriends (Zach Galifianakis and Ray Liotta), and win the girl of his dreams.
“I like movies about people who are extremely damaged emotionally, and who are looking for a way out of that,” Arteta said just before Youth in Revolt had its premiere at last fall’s Toronto film festival. “I like movies about characters who use their emotional damage for their benefit, somehow.”
He went through the list, a series of edgy movies that comprise his filmography: Star Maps, his first feature film, about a young boy who renounces the life of male prostitution offered by his father; Chuck and Buck, about a man obsessed with a male friend to the point of stalking; The Good Girl, with Jennifer Aniston, about a girl’s relationship with a boy who thinks he’s the reincarnation of Holden Caulfield.
