1. Why does Julianne Moore propose such a bad idea? The premise of the erotic thriller Chloe holds that frustrated wife Catherine Stewart (Julianne Moore) suspects her college-professor husband David (Liam Neeson) of cheating on her. She happens to meet a beautiful call girl, Chloe (Amanda Seyfried), and hires her to test David’s fidelity. It hardly seems a fair temptation, however. As Slate’s Dana Stevens suggests
…
4. What does Chloe want? As Chloe says in her opening narration, she finds that her words and role-playing techniques are as important to customer satisfaction as what she does with a body — essentially, she becomes a fantasy figure. It could be that she “read” Catherine and knew that the older woman wanted a fantasy rather than her husband to actually cheat on her. And maybe she suspected that David wouldn’t cheat on her based on their short encounter. (On the other hand, if Catherine pays her to sleeps with him, and Chloe doesn’t, the call girl’s in breach of contract.) Chloe’ …

Jurors resume deliberations Wednesday in John O’Keefe murder trial in Toronto
The Canadian Press
TORONTO There’s no verdict yet in the trial of two men accused of fatally shooting innocent bystander John O’Keefe outside a Toronto strip club.
Jurors retired last night night without reaching a decision but will resume deliberations today.
Edward Paredes, 24, and Awet Zekarias, 25, have pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder in O’Keefe’s death.
O’Keefe was walking along Yonge Street outside the Brass Rail tavern on January 12th, 2008 when he was struck by a bullet.
Paredes tried to plead guilty to manslaughter at the start of the trial in Ontario Superior Court but the prosecution refused the offer.
During the trial, Paredes admitted he fired the gun but says he was only trying to scare bouncers who had ejected him from the strip club.

he testimony of a gunman who has admitted to killing an innocent bystander during a dispute with bouncers outside a Toronto strip club will be read back to jurors weighing the young man’s fate and that of his best friend.
The nine-man, three-woman jury is particularly interested in what Edward Paredes, 24, told court about the moment he raised and fired his semi-automatic handgun on the Yonge Street sidewalk, near the Brass Rail tavern, in the early hours of Jan. 12, 2008. Now in their second day of deliberations, the jurors sent a note to Madam Justice Mary Lou Benotto asking to hear the testimony again, along with that of an off-duty police officer who testified to seeing Mr. Paredes take out his gun and “rack” it to load it.

Toronto Adult Entertainment: SCREEN SCENE: EGOYAN’S ‘CHLOE’ A MUDDLED MESS; AUDIARD’S ‘A PROPHET’ TREMENDOUS
March 30th, 2010 · No Comments
His newest work is “Chloe,” a muddy effort in which a successful female doctor starts to obsess that her husband, David, a university professor, is having an affair with one of his students. They live in an ultra-modern house in a quiet corner of upscale Toronto. It all takes place at the raw end of winter, when March still has cruel ideas and dirty snow is piled up on the sidewalks. Catherine and David have a sullen son named Michael, who is some sort of piano prodigy. He also plays ice hockey, this being Canada and all.
Catherine, acted with her usual excellence by Julianne Moore, hires a hooker to tempt her possibly cheating spouse, stoically and blandly played by Liam Neeson. But Egoyan and his screenwriter, Erin Cressida Wilson, have something in mind other than the collapse of a marriage. They are interested in cheap thrills. Thus Catherine becomes less concerned about what hubby’s doing and more concerned about getting inside a prostitute’s thou …

Toronto Adult Entertainment: Amanda Seyfried and Julianne Moore on ‘Chloe,’ Miscommunication, and Acting …
March 28th, 2010 · No Comments
By Christopher John Farley
In a recent interview with Speakeasy, actresses Amanda Seyfried and Julianne Moore talked about co-starring in the new erotic drama “Chloe,” directed by Atom Egoyan. In the film, Moore plays a gynecologist and Seyfried plays a call girl whom she hires to test her husband’s fidelity.
“One thing that’s particular to Atom, is he has a real understanding of the subtleties of communication,” says Moore about Egoyan, who also directed the 1997 film “The Sweet Hereafter.” “He is always aware that what people are saying to one another is not really what they’re communicating. And because this is a movie about emotional intimacy, relationships, and marriage…that notion of communication and miscommunication is paramount.”
Speaking of communication and miscommunication, Speakeasy really does want to hear more about Egoyan’s filmmaking aesthetic, but we guess we have to ask about the steamy love scene the two actresses share in “Chloe.”

Toronto Adult Entertainment: Chloe (Review)

Atom Egoyan rekindles his lurking soft-core desires with a tawdry script by Eric Cressida Wilson, whose 2002 film Secretary transcended a cultural movement of sexual identity. Audiences will have no such luck with this formulaic suspense picture about sexual deception.
Julianne Moore’s Catherine Stewart is a successful Toronto doctor and wife to her well-liked college-professor husband David (Liam Neeson), who is loyal but also an inveterate flirt. David’s failure to make it back to the couple’s palatial modern home in time for his “surprise” birthday party sets Catherine’s teeth on edge, believing that he’s carrying on an affair with one of his students.
Catherine makes the mistake of a lifetime when she hires local call girl Chloe (Amanda Seyfried) in an effort to discover if her husband can be provoked into cheating. Wilson’s script sets up Chloe as the film’s protagonist-apparent but backpedals around in a game of musical chairs that shifts focus among the hooker, the couple and even their romantically inclined teenaged son Michael (Max Thieriot).

… Chloe’: Egoyan’s latest is ‘Fatal Attraction’ meets ‘Poison Ivy’
By Jeff Simon, The Buffalo News, N.Y.
Mar. 26–There is a supposedly erotic moment in Atom Egoyan’s ridiculous but entertaining “Chloe” that elicited a couple of spontaneous and unintentional guffaws at the critic’s screening. I wouldn’t dream of spoiling it for you, so let’s just say it involves shoes and leave it at that.
Chloe Three stars (Out of four) Julianne Moore, Liam Neeson and Amanda Seyfried star in Atom Egoyan film about a disturbed young prostitute who wreaks havoc on an upscale family in Toronto. 96 minutes. Rated R for language and a good deal of nudity and sex.

… Chloe,” which opened Friday, represents a step into the mainstream for the cerebral Canadian filmmaker. Egoyan, 50, has earned numerous international honors but not much commercial success. Born in Cairo of Armenian descent and raised in Victoria, British Columbia, Egoyan often explores issues of alienation and identity. Those fixations add intellectual heft to “Chloe,” which might have been a “Fatal Attraction” retread in other hands.
During a recent Minneapolis visit, Egoyan said he persuaded his cast to sign on for a sexually charged thriller by describing it simply as a drama. “This is the story of a marriage,” he said. “Our erotic lives are an essential part of who we are, and the erotic life of this couple has disappeared. Julianne Moore’s character hires a prostitute rather than a detective to investigate her husband because she needs to re-create the erotic image of who this man is. It also goes into the competing fantasies these women have of who the other might be. That makes for very interesting drama.
