Toronto Adult Entertainment: Guergis wants delay before committee testimony

April 25th, 2010 · No Comments

OTTAWA â MP Helena Guergis has asked her parliamentary colleagues to hold off asking her about the business dealings of her husband, former MP Rahim Jaffer, until she finds out what the RCMP and ethics commissioner want to do about separate allegations involving her.
Guergis’s request to delay her appearance at the House of Commons government operations and estimates committee comes on the eve of Jaffer’s appearance Wednesday at that committee.
It will be the first time Jaffer has spoken publicly since explosive allegations surfaced earlier this month that linked him and his wife to prostitutes and cocaine users. Those charges prompted Prime Minister Stephen Harper to fire Guergis from cabinet, suspend her from caucus and call in the police and the parliamentary ethics commissioner.
“It has not been determined what action will be taken, if any, by these organizations but I plan to co-operate fully as I have always maintained no wrong doing with relation to these matters,” Guergis said in a letter, obtained by Canwest News Service, that she sent to to MPs on the government operations committee.

Toronto Adult Entertainment: Poll numbers stable as Jaffer scandal widens

April 25th, 2010 · No Comments

The poll finds that the Conservatives enjoy the support of 35% of voters; Liberals are the pick of 29%; and the NDP is at 16%. In Quebec, the Bloc Quebecois is on top with 35%, followed by the Liberals at 24%, Conservatives at 20% and NDP at 11%.
Pollster Ipsos Reid surveyed 1,000 Canadians by phone between Tuesday and Thursday, after Canadians had begun to digest many of the scandalous elements of the allegations involving Jaffer and his wife MP Helena Guergis.
On April 9, Prime Minister Stephen Harper fired Guergis from cabinet, kicked her out of caucus and called in the RCMP and ethics commissioner for unspecified allegations about her conduct. Since then, allegations have surfaced that Guergis and Jaffer were photographed in the presence of cocaine users and prostitutes.

Toronto Strip Clubs: Promoter Gillani works hard, plays hard

April 25th, 2010 · No Comments

Yes, Gillani enjoys booze and strip clubs, Roe said.
“That’s how Naz blows off steam.”
But Roe says he had no issues with Gillani’s performance. “Mr. Gillani worked his ass off. We had no issue with his effort.”
Roe recalled a meeting he said Gillani organized around September with Jaffer and other technology firms. Gillani said Jaffer might be able to help the companies wade through government bureaucracy, and assist them in structuring applications to get government funds, Roe said.
“There was no promise of access to politicians,” Roe said, adding it had nothing to do with lobbying.
At Club Paradise, a Toronto strip club, staff confirmed that Gillani is a patron and always a “gentleman.” They denied claims in the Star that Gillani did business out of the club’s VIP lounge. There is no VIP lounge, they said.

Toronto Adult Entertainment: Sex-ed battle in Ontario a new twist on old story

April 24th, 2010 · No Comments

She expressed hope that the “weight of the past” would not adversely influence the implementation of the latest curriculum changes which seek to introduce, among other things, the subject of homosexuality and anal sex as early as Grade 3.
“Two hours later, there was an announcement saying that the government backed off,” she said on Friday. “On the one hand, I was disappointed. On the other, I was not the least bit surprised.”
Today, it’s the topic of homosexuality that seems to have offended a few very vocal parents and religious leaders.
A hundred years ago, it was birth control and masturbation, Sethna said.
In the early 1900s, there were concerns about prostitution and venereal disease. There was a consensus among parents, educators and children that the subject ought to be taught in school.

Toronto Adult Entertainment: Jaffer denies allegations in committee hearing

April 24th, 2010 · No Comments

But the MPs on that committee — including his former Conservative caucus colleagues — weren’t buying some of his claims, with one of those Conservatives accusing Jaffer of lying to the committee over boasts Jaffer made on his website about his connections to the federal government.
“You have to understand that this type of behaviour sullies all of our names,” Conservative MP Chris Warkentin told Jaffer.
Those claims are one of the key factors behind allegations, made by some on the committee, that Jaffer tried to sell his influence with his former political colleagues or engaged in improper and potentially illegal contact with government officials.
Jaffer’s testimony was his first public comment since allegations surfaced that he and his wife, Conservative MP Helena Guergis, were photographed in the presence of prostitutes and cocaine users.

Patrick Glemaud, sought advice from Conservative MP Brian Jean last fall on how a division of Wright Tech Systems could get the federal government to invest $100 million or 25% of a $400 million project to build a series of environmentally friendly waste management facilities.
Parliament’s ethics commissioner has asked Guergis to respond to allegations of conflict-of-interest allegations involving the company. The federal lobbying commissioner has been asked to investigate Jaffer for potential violations of the Lobbying Act.
Guergis is also the subject of preliminary inquiries by the RCMP who are acting on a request from Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
It is believed that the allegations which prompted Harper to act are related to the possibility that photographs exist of Jaffer and Guergis in the presence of cocaine users and prostitutes.
