Toronto Escorts: `Bad boy’ Harper imagery highlights controversial prostitution-law challenge

December 26th, 2011 · No Comments

TORONTO – One of my most memorable stories this past year involved a leather-clad dominatrix who called Prime Minister Stephen Harper a “very bad, bad boy” in need of punishment for the country’s current anti-prostitution laws.
With a whip in her hand, long time sex worker Terri-Jean Bedford stood outside the Ontario highest court last June and insinuated she’d give Harper the same treatment she gave her clients if the laws didn’t change.
Bedford is one of the plaintiffs and the face of one of the most controversial and polarizing court cases in the country right now.
She and two other sex workers say their constitutional rights to security are being breached because current laws force them to work underground and prevent them from protecting themselves from violent pimps and johns.

Toronto Escorts: Baby George’s mom an ex-prostitute

December 23rd, 2011 · No Comments

TORONTO – The mother at the centre of a case involving a missing dead infant is a former prostitute and drug user who once witnessed a shooting.
Nadia Ayyad, 23, made a brief appearance at Newmarket , Ont., court Thursday after being arrested a day earlier and charged in connection with the disappearance and death of her baby son George Doodhnaught.
Baby George’s father, Ricky Ray Doodhnaught, was arrested earlier in December.
Ayyad, with long black hair hanging limp over her shoulders and dark circles under her eyes, stood in the prisoner’s box, hands clasped in front of her.
It wasn’t her first time in a court of law.

London court also heard that Ayyad had aspirations of being an exotic dancer, but that she had unwittingly been brought to London to be pimped out as a prostitute.

December 19th, 2011 · No Comments

George Stamos, in his second appearance at Dancemakers, mines queer politics in Liklik Pik, a duet for two men, in the first program. Peter Bingham/EDAM, also making a return engagement to Dancemakers, offers a playful yet complex exchange between two men, in Right in Front of You. On the same program, emerging dance maker Andrea Spaziani contemplates the possibility of really feeling ready to perform in The Moment Before. The third program presents the Toronto debut of German artist Martin Nachbar in Repeater, an intergenerational work with his 73 year old father.
Program 1 – George StamosHumans have long been interested in examining the distinctions and similarities between themselves and other animals. Inspired by his own fascination, following imaginative impulses and convergent queer tangents along the way, George Stamos pursues this curiosity in Liklik Pik, a cross-media duet for ‘pigs’.
Living and working in Montreal, contemporary choreographer Stamos was a sex-worker’s rights and AIDS activist from 1987-1993 and a go-go dancer from 1989-2000.
