Effie’s long-troubled brother, Duncan, now works at a Toronto homeless shelter and is, for Effie, a not always trustworthy touchstone to the past. In Why Men Lie, Effie Gillis’s fears, her reservations about the probity of men, are about to be realized. Her affair with Campbell, which began with such promise begins to go awry. Campbell, who had been at first so open, so dependable, seems to harbour a few demons. He is seen talking to prostitutes, in a seedy neighbourhood. He is carted off to hospital after a violent altercation with street thugs and appears obsessed with a Canadian prisoner on death row, in Texas, whose story he has been tracking for television. Professional objectivity has given way to persona involvement. Campbell becomes more introverted, disappears for weeks without coherent explanation, then re-appears, distant and seemingly changed.

Toronto Strip Clubs: Niagara strippers accuse police of unfair treatment

Some cops in Niagara Region are being accused of ‘targeting’ exotic dancers due to a lack of prostitution-related cases to deal with since Ontario hooker laws are being appealed, says a group that represents strippers.
“The police are picking an easy target in dancers,” said Tim Lambrinos, of the Exotic Dancers Association of Canada. “We are very concerned that our clubs are being targeted.”

There are nine strip clubs in the region and they employ up to 900 dancers and other staff.

About 40 strippers were forced to undergo security checks in front of 500 patrons by members of the force’s Licencing Unit. One charge was laid against a club owner.

The association is also calling for female cops to patrol and investigate strip clubs.

Toronto Escorts: Toronto cops stop ‘john’ sweeps

The Ontario Court of Appeal last March overruled a lower court decision, determining provisions of the Criminal Code — the prohibition of keeping a brothel and living off the avails — were unconstitutional. The appeal court, however, ruled that the offence of communicating for the purposes of prostitution should remain on the books.
The court gave the federal government a year to address the laws, meaning the status quo remains in effect for the time being.
The federal government recently launched an appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada which will have final say on the issue.
Pugash said the decision to shelve john sweeps is based on the force’s reluctance to use “finite” resources to arrest people when so much “uncertainty” currently surrounds prostitution laws.
Pugash said investigations into illegal massage parlours, brothels and escort agencies will carry on as usual. (A police source inaccurately reported in Sunday’s Toronto Sun that police were no longer investigating escort agencies.)

Toronto Escorts: Toronto John School’s enrollment declining

Police officials confirmed Sunday that Toronto’s finest have placed john sweeps on hold following a court rulings that struck down several prostitution laws.
Most recently, the Ontario Court of Appeal ruled last March that the prohibition of keeping a brothel and living off the avails of prostitution are unconstitutional. The court determined, however, that communicating for the purposes of prostitution should remain illegal.
The matter is now headed to the Supreme Court of Canada for a final decision.
Fenn said his john school, which is offered as an alternative to a conviction for trying to buy sex, is currently counselling three men, but normally sees up to 60 at this time of year.
Students, he said, include those who have contracted sexually transmitted diseases, had their finances and marriages destroyed and have even been beaten by pimps.

For his part, Mayor Rob Ford has asked the city manager to conduct a report on the casino and report back to council. That report is expected in October.
Other councillors are asking for more than just a report on the issue.
Coun. Adam Vaughan recommends that no casino be permitted in Toronto unless officials conduct a city-wide referendum on the subject, as part of a general election.
The motion would halt the debate over a possible casino until the city’s next election in October 2014.
According to Vaughan’s motion, a casino can have a negative impact on local businesses, particularly nearby bars and restaurants. Crime, suicide, prostitution and drug related crimes are also significant worries, it suggests.

BRAMPTON, Ont. — Just days after a teacher in Peel region was arrested for having sex with an underage prostitute, another faculty member from a local school faces allegations of engaging in inappropriate sexual behaviour with a 13-year-old girl.
Peel Regional Police say the latest accusation involves a grade school teacher who allegedly committed “several sexual offences against a former student.”
David Lang, 29, is charged with sexual interference, invitation to sexual touching and sexual assault.
The alleged victim was previously a student of Lang’s, police said Monday.
At the time of his arrest, the accused, who is to appear in Brampton court June 4, was teaching a Grade 8 class at Cheyne Middle School.

Fletcher’s Creek Senior Public School was on a P.A. day when York police revealed Friday that one of its teachers was arrested in an investigation into juvenile prostitution.
