BRAMPTON, Ont. — Just days after a teacher in Peel region was arrested for having sex with an underage prostitute, another faculty member from a local school faces allegations of engaging in inappropriate sexual behaviour with a 13-year-old girl.
Peel Regional Police say the latest accusation involves a grade school teacher who allegedly committed “several sexual offences against a former student.”
David Lang, 29, is charged with sexual interference, invitation to sexual touching and sexual assault.
The alleged victim was previously a student of Lang’s, police said Monday.
At the time of his arrest, the accused, who is to appear in Brampton court June 4, was teaching a Grade 8 class at Cheyne Middle School.

Looking back on that time in her life, Grimes says that scene was “not attractive to me at all. You see right through it. Once you see it in person, face to face it’s really not as glamorous as it looks. It’s really not my bag.”
She has friends who ended up as prostitutes
This season, Grimes’ character Annie became a prostitute. Through she says she didn’t do any “hands on” research for the part, the 22-year-old claims she “knows people” that have had similar experiences. “[Annie's] product of choice was selling her body,” she says. “I do know people that that kind of thing has happened to and normally it starts from just hanging out with people who just want a companion and this and that for the night.”

Edwards pleaded guilty in Newmarket court on Monday to a dozen charges, including extortion, unlawful confinement, obstructing a police officer and assault.
The plea deal was worked out by assistant Crown Attorney Michael Demczur and defence lawyer Leora Shemesh, but they could not agree on an appropriate sentence.
A sentencing hearing before Justice Peter West is set for June 28.
No family members were present in court and Edwards’s voice was barely audible as he repeatedly said the word, “guilty.”
A preliminary hearing was told that Edwards trained his former girlfriend to avoid police, with the threat that “his people would harm her and her family.”
Court also heard that he kept hunting down and assaulting the former stripper when she tried to leave him, including one occasion when he punched her in the face and left her unconscious by the side of a road.

With prostitution laws in limbo, Toronto Police lay off anti-john stings
With the Ontario and Canadian governments appealing the Ontario Court of Appeals ruling affirming that Canada’s prostitution laws were incompatible with the Charter of Rights, we’ve got a while to go yet before there’s any clarity on the subject of sex work in Canada’s legal system. So the Toronto Police have decided to take the small-l liberal response to the ambiguity in the law and stop the labour-intensive stings designed to catch men who solicit sex for money. From the Toronto Sun:
The Toronto Police Service confirmed Sunday the force has put “on hold” the sweeps in which female officers pose as street prostitutes to arrest men who pay for sex. The stop to the long-standing stings comes in the wake of court rulings which have declared some of Canada’s prostitution laws as unconstitutional, said spokesman Mark Pugash. “The law surrounding this issue is in some state of uncertainty, and I think everybody is looking for the definitive wor …

One of the motions up for debate before the 13-member committee reaffirms the need for a public referendum before a decision is made, while another would rule out Ontario Place as a possible location.
Debate on whether to add a downtown casino in Toronto has been growing since the provincial government expressed its interest in the project earlier this year.
The provincial government has said a downtown Toronto casino could bring in $4 billion annually and create 4,000 new jobs.
A motion by Coun. Adam Vaughan recommends that no casino be permitted in Toronto unless officials conduct a city-wide referendum on the subject, as part of a general election.
The motion would halt the debate over a possible casino until the city’s next election in October of 2014.
According to the motion, a casino can have a negative impact on local businesses, particularly nearby bars and restaurants. Crime, suicide, prostitution and drug related crimes are also significant worries, it suggests.

The Ontario Court of Appeal determined in March that provisions of the Criminal Code — the prohibition of keeping a brothel and living off the avails — were unconstitutional. The appeal court, however, ruled that the offence of communicating for the purposes of prostitution should remain on the books.
The court gave the federal government a year to address the laws, meaning the status quo remains in effect for the time being.
The federal government recently launched an appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada which will have final say on the issue.
Pugash said the decision to shelve John sweeps is based on the force’s reluctance to use “finite” resources to arrest people when so much “uncertainty” currently surrounds prostitution laws.
Pugash said investigations into illegal massage parlours, brothels and escort agencies will carry on as usual. (A police source inaccurately reported in Sunday’s Toronto Sun that police were no longer investigating escort agencies.)

… The adult clubs will be a perfect fit for this activity,” Mammoliti says.
“The clubs are already there and some jurisdictions have given them permission to place brothels on their property.”
He is back-tracking on a red-light district which he previously supported due to a proposal by MGM to create an Las Vegas-style entertainment complex in Toronto.
Mammoliti claims brothels can curb the trafficking of women for the sex trade, clean up the shady massage and sex parlour industry, place health workers in clubs, force pimps out and make it safer for prostitutes and their customers.
“This is a very lucrative business and we can earn a lot of money as a city,” Mammoliti says. “We were the largest pimps in North America because of the amount of massage parlour permits issued.”

It is also operating outside the boundaries of the law as uncertainty continues to surround legislation defining just who can and cannot offer the services of prostitution.
Toronto escort Amanda is one of those waiting for clear legal definition of her chosen profession.
She is yet to know if she’ll have to register her company, give receipts or collect taxes for sex acts if prostitution laws are struck down on appeal in Ontario.
The uncertainty has led to Toronto Police stopping some vice investigations as a law is challenged in the Court of Appeal for Ontario.
This follows a ruling that sex workers should be able to conduct business in homes and brothels with proper security to protect the women.
“Investigations into escort agencies have been placed on hold pending an appeal of prostitution laws,” said Toronto Const. Victor Kwong. “The investigations on hold are to determine if prostitution laws are being broken.”
