HALIFAX
This week OpenFile Halifax recovered from the impact of bike week by reporting on a 30-year-old textbook that was still being used in one Halifax school. CTV followed up on our story (without attributing the source of the idea) and school board staff reacted by phasing out the book.
Beloved bargain hunter Bill Mont is getting rid of his 10 trucks of treasures. But one customer didn’t think Mont, a self-proclaimed hoarder, had it in him. Last Saturday we told you about a blog that posted found polaroids from Mont’s shop. What will he do now?
Recent legislation in Ontario has made brothels and living off the avails of prostitution legal in that province. That lead an anonymous reader to ask: what will that mean for Halifax sex workers?

… If the law goes through it means we will have to register our business and give receipts,” Amanda says. “That means we would have to pay taxes like a regular company.”
She’s never had a problem with police or authorities prying into her business.
“It’s almost legal being an escort,” Amanda says. “We don’t have to pay taxes and have the best of both worlds.”
Toronto councillor Giorgio Mammoliti says the rules governing escort agencies and massage parlours are not being enforced due to the current legal challenge.
“This is still a major issue in most communities,” Mammoliti says. “We as municipalities cannot do anything to take enforcement action.”
Mammoliti estimates there are about 3,000 agencies, including massage parlours, bawdy houses, brothels and spas scattered throughout the city. Most are unregulated and anything goes, he says.

It is also operating outside the boundaries of the law as uncertainty continues to surround legislation defining just who can and cannot offer the services of prostitution.
Toronto escort Amanda is one of those waiting for clear legal definition of her chosen profession.
She is yet to know if she’ll have to register her company, give receipts or collect taxes for sex acts if prostitution laws are struck down on appeal in Ontario.
The uncertainty has led to Toronto Police stopping some vice investigations as a law is challenged in the Court of Appeal for Ontario.
This follows a ruling that sex workers should be able to conduct business in homes and brothels with proper security to protect the women.
“Investigations into escort agencies have been placed on hold pending an appeal of prostitution laws,” said Toronto Const. Victor Kwong. “The investigations on hold are to determine if prostitution laws are being broken.”

Theatre Caravel’s two short scripts, This Property Is Condemned and Talk To Me Like The Rain And Let Me Listen, offered looks at relationships, one tentative and fresh, the other long-term and tired. Movingly directed by Eric Double and Julia Nish-Lapidus, both are brief character sketches filled with the playwright’s suggestive poetry.
Actors Steve Boleantu and Elisabeth Lagerlöf captured their characters with sure performances, Lagerlöf having the flashier material – first as a loner whose fantasies buoy her world, then as an unhappy wife whose dreams give her momentary freedom – and taking fine advantage of it.
The red light district staged the best-known of the festival’s plays, Suddenly, Last Summer, in which a Southern matriarch, Violet Venable, tries to keep the memory of her adored poet son, Sebastian, pure by having his cousin and companion Catherine lobotomized so she won’t tell the details of his horrible death.

But he had to get over his fan shyness quickly. And he did.  ”I remember doing rehearsals as we were trying to choreograph how we were going to conceive a child on the hood of a car.
“It was, you know, awkward at first, but we sort of worked out all the scenes  and then just went for it,” adds the actor.  ”And she’s great to work off of.  She’s witty, and into banter, so it was a lot of fun to play off her.”
Both became friends quickly. The playful Crawford even forked over some money to entertain Kendrick with a private dancer on her 25th birthday, which Kendrick confirms.
“We went to the Claremont Lounge, which is like an Atlanta institution,” she says of the kitschy strip club.
“It’s sort of hilarious. They have like 60-year-old women who are strippers, and that’s awesome. And this woman, dressed as Little Bo Peep, came up and said, ‘This guy just bought you a lap dance.’”

TORONTO -
Toronto could one day have special prosecutors to crack the whip on naughty strip clubs, massage parlours and holistic centres.
Councillor Peter Milczyn wants city bureaucrats to look at the benefits of hiring special prosecutors to handle prosecutions against adult entertainment, body rub parlours, holistic centres and other problem establishments caught flaunting Toronto’s bylaws.
“We have problem establishments,” Milczyn said Tuesday. “In my particular case, the issues I’m dealing with (in my ward) primarily are holistics and body rub parlours. There are a lot of issues with effective prosecution of them. Part of it is the quality of evidence that is gathered and part of it is frustration with how the prosecutions deal with it.”

Toronto Strip Clubs: NYC’s neighbourhood chic

Midtown is where the big chain hotels climb to the sky. This low-rise 88-room hotel dares to be different and has fun at the same time. A Jetsons-inspired ’60s theme pervades with curvy space age seating and mod sensibilities throughout. It has a rooftop bar with views onto Central Park. The ground floor Blue Ribbon Sushi Bar & Grill is popular with CNN staff from the Time Warner Center next store, where an excellent affordable lunch can be had at Bouchon Bakery.
Gild Hall
It’s not this former 18-storey Holiday Inn that is lined with namesake gold — it’s the Wall Street neighbours, especially the Federal Reserve Bank, making this probably the safest part of the city. Tours of the world’s biggest stash of gold can be arranged a month in advance (see ny.frb.org). Dimpled leather headboards, wood panelling, work stations, walls of books and an antler chandelier lend an eclectic gentleman’s club ambience to this business hotel, which often has great weekend rates. Stroll pedestrian Stone Street, New York’s oldest cobblestone lane lined with bars and restaurants.
