The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) today announced more projects that will feature in its 2010 event. The festivals line-up will include screenings of several Irish productions and co-productions including Tom Halls Sensation; Jerzy Skolimowskis Essential Killing; Dome Karukoski’s Lapland Odyssey (which will enjoy its world premiere at the event) and the previously announced feature documentary, The Pipe from Risteard O’Domhnall.
As part of TIFFs Contemporary World Cinema Programme, Tom Hall (Wide Open Spaces) will see his latest feature, Sensation receive its international premiere. The film details the relationship between Tipperary farmer Donal Duggan, played by Domhnall Gleeson (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) and a veteran Kiwi escort, played by Luanne Gordon (King Kong). They begin as client and call girl, evolve into something like lovers, then business partners and finally co-defendants.

“That scene is why I make the picture,” Cassel insists. “In the suburbs of Paris, where 80 per cent of the people are Muslim, Mesrine is a hero, like Robin Hood.” The actor snorts. “I want the people to see the real Jacques Mesrine.”

The 2006 election results in Nicaragua are known: Daniel Ortega became president for the second time. But this knowledge in no way detracts from this rich film, which uses the looming election (with artful use of archival footage and photographs providing historical and political context) to build tension.
The main attractions of Land, however, are the engaging folk Pinder finds to illustrate the complexity of land issues in Nicaragua. They aren’t as simple as “developers bad, locals good,” although some gringos do exploit cheap local labour. Pinder makes sure his key characters are not merely “representative” but real people whose fates we care about – even if we don’t like some of them that much.
My favourite is Dean, a foul-mouthed, beer-swilling American expat who’s a hilarious commentator on the intrigue between developers (“land whores and dirt pimps”) and locals. His gruff poetry finds its counterpoint in lovely scenes with Nicaraguan poet Sebastien Narvaez, who feels for the nation’s broken soul.

Up in Toronto, Dancap Productions imported two musicals from The States. Miss Saigon, from Pittsburgh’s Civic Light Opera, closed August 1, and a touring version of NYC’s Lincoln Center revival of South Pacific will run August 12-September 5 at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in downtown Toronto.
Miss Saigon is a loose adaptation of Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly,” set in 1975, during the last weeks of the American presence in Vietnam. Bargirl Kim is “sold” to Chris, a U. S. Marine Lieutenant, and their tryst blossoms into an ultimately tragic love story. Hovering over all is the Engineer, an amoral Eurasian pimp.

Max Layton, born in Montreal in 1946, is the eldest son of well-known Canadian poet Irving Layton. His parents split up when he was 13; his mother, Betty Sutherland, and his sister, Naomi, moved out to California. Max stayed with his father and stepmother in a downtown Montreal apartment until his final year of high school. At 16, he took up residence in a rooming house with alcoholics, a 60-year-old prostitute and a WWI veteran who coughed all night.
