Max Layton, born in Montreal in 1946, is the eldest son of well-known Canadian poet Irving Layton. His parents split up when he was 13; his mother, Betty Sutherland, and his sister, Naomi, moved out to California. Max stayed with his father and stepmother in a downtown Montreal apartment until his final year of high school. At 16, he took up residence in a rooming house with alcoholics, a 60-year-old prostitute and a WWI veteran who coughed all night.

The Oscar-nominated star of Pulp Fiction and Snakes on a Plane was impossible to miss at St. George’s Golf and Country Club in Toronto on Monday, decked out in a loud orange hat and matching shirt.
One of the best things about golf, he has said, is you can dress like a pimp.

Playing the musical’s Butterfly figure, Dionisio pulls off a subtle but impressive metamorphosis. As Kim, the tragic Vietnamese bar girl who bears a U.S. soldier’s child just as Saigon falls to the Vietcong, she seems to gain in maturity with each scene. At first convincingly girl-like as a demure teenage virgin (Dionisio is actually 36), she evolves into a sweetly doting mother and, finally, a haggard, near-hysterical woman who will do anything to safeguard her child’s future.
If Kim, the reluctant prostitute, is the musical’s paragon of pure-hearted self-sacrifice, Gray’s slimy pimp, The Engineer, is its symbol of corrupt self-interest. Needless to say, he’s the more entertaining character. As the scheming French-Vietnamese entrepreneur who sees Kim’s half-American kid as his ticket to the United States, a purple-suited Gray goes gleefully over the top. In his two big musical numbers, If You Want to Die in Bed and The American Dream, he chews Michael Anania’s bamboo scenery like a lean and greasy panda.

TORONTO Atom Egoyan’s erotic thriller “Chloe” and the TV crime dramas “Flashpoint” and “The Bridge” lead the nominees for the Directors Guild of Canada Awards.
Egoyan’s sexually charged feature garnered nods in the five categories it was eligible for — best picture, direction, production, picture editing and sound editing.
It stars Julianne Moore and Liam Neeson as a married couple whose lives are shattered by a sensuous call girl, played by Amanda Seyfried.
“It’s great for the team — it’s probably the only thing we’re up for since it’s not eligible for Genies or anything like that,” Egoyan said Thursday, referring to the Genie Awards which honour the best in Canadian film.

There will be the usual “Gayberts” claiming that all Idol Tour ills are due to less people watching without the Great Adam, that the show suffered because Adam was not immediately placed in charge of it, and no show anywhere is any good if it lacks Great Adam, Himself.
The truth is:
1. The show picked 2 favorites to build up as stars that lacked charisma (Crystal, Lee) but fit Dioguardi’s insistance the show ratings just craved a “singer-songwriter” who would cut an original album soon.
2. They looked around and selected “Big MIke” as the one they wished to pimp as the lovable, charismatic contestant that America would fall in love with. No, they generally loathed the guy. The big preening jock so many didn’t like much in their own lives, with good vocals used to make awful music.

See it to believe it: Queen wears 3D glasses
For all those critics who say that wearing 3D glasses isn’t cool, well, maybe you can pimp them out with some Swarovski crystals like the Queen.
Soak in this picture because it’s one for the history books. 84-year-old Queen Elizabeth II has become the highest-ranking dignitary to be photographed in 3D glasses. Alright, so maybe it doesn’t quite prove that 3D glasses are cool, but props to the Queen for actually going through with it. She does look a little bit miffed in that picture, though.
Of course, being that she is the Queen and all, she got to bypass the bucket of reusable glasses, and instead got a special pair encrusted with Swarovski crystals.
It all happened during her visit to the Pinewood Toronto Studios in Canada. She got to witness a scene being filmed in 3D, and then immediately watching it played back on a big projection screen.
