Toronto Escorts: Kathleen Turner Conversation in Toronto

April 28th, 2012 · No Comments

Kathleen Turner, perhaps best remembered for seducing William Hurt in Lawrence Kasdan’s Body Heat and for romping about with Michael Douglas in Robert Zemeckis’ Romancing the Stone, will be present on May 7 at the Toronto International Film Festival’s Bell Lightbox to discuss her career in films and on stage. Turner will be making her Toronto stage debut in Matthew Lombardo’s High at the Royal Alexandra Theatre from May 8–13.
Turner, 58 next June, has appeared in nearly 30 features. In addition to the aforementioned two titles, her credits include Ken Russell’s Crimes of Passion, as a Belle de Jour-like sex worker; John Huston’s Oscar-nominated Prizzi’s Honor, as Jack Nicholson’s partner in crime; the Lewis Teague-directed Romancing the Stone sequel The Jewel of the Nile; Francis Ford Coppola’s Peggy Sue Got Married, which earned her a Best Actress Oscar nomination; and Danny DeVito’s The War of the Roses, once again opposite Michael Douglas.

Toronto Escorts: Brothels for Toronto strip clubs?

April 28th, 2012 · No Comments

Ailing Toronto strip clubs have bold plans to become glitzy high-security bordellos that feature both prostitutes and exotic dancers now that the Ontario Court of Appeal has thrown out a ban on hookers.

Prostitution was made legal after the court struck down a ban on brothels last month, saying it puts prostitutes in danger and they should be allowed to work safely indoors.

Mammoliti claims brothels can curb the trafficking of women for the sex trade, clean up the shady massage and sex parlour industry, place health workers in clubs, force pimps out and make it safer for prostitutes and their customers.

He said it will be up to club owners or managers to find qualified prostitutes to work at the clubs.

He said the brothels will be clean, well-inspected and customers issued a receipt after they’ve paid for using a prostitute.

The five appellate justices also reworded the law against living on the avails of prostitution to clarify it would only apply in cases of exploitation because it could otherwise apply to people such as a prostitute’s bodyguards, accountant or receptionist.

Vancouver sex worker Amy Lebovitch called the federal government disrespectful toward prostitutes.

Prostitution is harmful for society, as it exploits Canada’s most vulnerable people, especially women,” Nicholson told the House of Commons.

The court rejected Ottawa’s contention that prostitutes knowingly choose an inherently dangerous occupation and therefore can’t blame laws that might add to the risks.

Toronto Escorts: Fugitive human trafficker nabbed

April 25th, 2012 · No Comments

A convicted human trafficker who has been on the run from authorities for nine months was captured in Kingston on Tuesday.
Imani Nakpangi, 29, became Canada’s first convicted human trafficker in 2008 for pimping out teenage girls from a motel room in Mississauga, Ont.
In June 2008, he pleaded guilty to human trafficking, living on the avails of juvenile prostitution and possession of counterfeit currency.
During his court proceedings, the judge heard that at the time of his December 2007 arrest, he had a 14-year-old girl turning tricks for him.
The court also heard how an 18-year-old woman, who led police to the pimp, had been forced to work for him for 2 1/2 years before escaping. During that time, she said she was forced to have sex with up to 10 men a day and hand over all her earnings to Nakpangi.

Toronto Escorts: Federal gov’t seeks to appeal sex-trade court ruling legalizing bawdy houses

April 25th, 2012 · No Comments

The five appellate justices also reworded the law against living on the avails of prostitution to clarify it would only apply in cases of exploitation because it could otherwise apply to people such as a prostitute’s bodyguards, accountant or receptionist.
In its application to the Supreme Court for leave to appeal, the federal government said the Ontario Court of Appeal judgment creates a “legislative void.”
“This represents a fundamental shift in criminal law and social policy in respect of provisions that have been in force, in some fashion, since prior to Confederation,” the application states.
It also has an impact on police and prosecutions, both inside and outside Ontario, the government brief states.
Sex-trade workers, who hailed the Ontario court ruling as a recognition of their rights and said it would enhance their safety, expressed disappointment at Ottawa’s decision.
Vancouver sex worker Amy Lebovitch called the federal government disrespectful toward prostitutes.

Toronto Escorts: Appealing prostitution ruling shows disregard for sex workers’ safety

April 25th, 2012 · No Comments

On March 27, the Ontario Court of Appeal declared Canada’s bawdy house provisions were unconstitutional and amended the pimping provisions of the Criminal Code so only those exploiting prostitutes will be prosecuted. Their decision cleared the way for brothels and bodyguards but the court imposed stays on both: Legislators were given a year until brothels become legal, allowing Parliament time to redraft the law. But as of midnight, a 30-day stay was set to be lifted on allowing sex workers to hire bodyguards and drivers without their risking a charge of living on the avails of prostitution.

In the long shadow cast by the serial killer, the Ontario appeal court ruling tried to strike the right balance in addressing prostitute safety while noting community objections. And so they gave the green light to bordellos so prostitutes can legally move inside – pursuant to municipal bylaws, we’d assume – but upheld the ban on soliciting because no neighbourhood wants to be overrun with johns circling the block. For those concerned about exploitation and underage prostitutes, the court pointed to current laws on the books against human trafficking and pimping. It seemed a fair, realistic, dare we say, enlightened compromise.

Toronto Escorts: Feds seek to appeal ruling on bawdy houses

April 25th, 2012 · No Comments

Updated: Wed Apr. 25 2012 3:13:13 PM The Canadian Press
TORONTO The federal government is looking to appeal a sex-trade ruling that essentially legalized bawdy houses.
Justice Minister Rob Nicholson says the government believes the Supreme Court of Canada needs to provide a binding, national decision.
He also says the laws are constitutionally sound.
Last month, the Ontario Court of Appeal struck down the law barring brothels because it said it puts sex-trade workers at risk by forcing them to work outside.
It also reworded the law against living on the avails of prostitution to clarify it would only apply in cases of exploitation.
Nicholson says the Criminal Code provisions denounce and deter the most harmful and public aspects of prostitution.

Toronto Escorts: Shenae Grimes, ‘90210′ Star, Prays You Still Like Her (And Annie)

April 24th, 2012 · No Comments

What do Degrassi High and West Beverly Hills High School have in common? Well, not only have they both been the center of television reboots, but Shenae Grimes has walked the halls of both schools. The Canadian actress got her start as Darcy Edwards on “Degrassi: The Next Generation,” and after four seasons as a Christian with a bad-girl streak, Grimes packed up her life in Toronto and headed to LA to enroll at West Bev on “90210.”
Grimes’s character on the “90210″ reboot, Annie Wilson, transfered from Kansas wide-eyed and eager, but little did Grimes know that the writers of “90210″ were going to put her character to the test. From an obsessive-suicidal boyfriend to becoming a high-class call girl, Grimes has put up with everything and lived to tell the tale.

Toronto Escorts: How the Comedy Nerds Took Over

April 20th, 2012 · No Comments

When I returned to Toronto, I began writing about comedy for an alternative weekly and by the mid-1990s had a weekly column in The Toronto Star. I reviewed live shows and wrote features. It led to my first book, “Stand and Deliver: Inside Canadian Comedy” (in retrospect, a title so boring that it almost seems like parody). It was a strange beat. I spent half my time taking heat from the comedians for daring to criticize their work and the rest trying to convince editors that comedy was worthy of coverage. Being a comedy nerd meant being a freak. A girlfriend of mine once confessed that she was more disturbed that I went out to see comedy five times a week than she would be if I frequented prostitutes. “There is something about you needing to pay people to make you laugh that is really suspect,” she said. “At least sex I could understand.”
