Mammoliti is starting to make some sense on sex work in Toronto
Assuming that the Ontario Appeals Court ruling that legalized elements of sex work isn’t overturned at the Supreme Court of Canada, Toronto is going to have to figure out how to bring prostitution in to the legal and regulatory regime that governs everything in this city—which means licenses, taxes and more. Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti (Ward 7, York West), according to the Toronto Sun, wants to start that discussion now. He’s asking for a joint meeeting of two other committee chairs to discuss the future:
…
This sentiment is exactly right and in keeping with the ruling of both previous courts: criminalizing sex work, the courts held, was putting women’s lives in danger and legalizing it would be less harmful than the status quo.
It’s also nice to see that, according to the Toronto Sun, Mammoliti has given up on his idea of concentrating sex work in a “red light district” on Toronto Island, a plan th …

Toronto Escorts: Bunny Ranch, Nevada’s famous brothel, may be coming to Toronto

After an Ontario court ruled some prostitution laws were illegal, owner Dennis Hof started looking north
…
But the brothel may not be such an easy sell to Premier Dalton McGuinty. When he was asked about the potential Tuesday morning, McGuinty seemed confused and had to ask what the Moonlite Bunny Ranch was, reports the Canadian Press. When a reporter explained it was a brothel, the premier laughed nervously as his face went red.

In March, the Ontario Court of Appeal agreed with most of a lower court decision, ruling sex workers should be able to legally take their trade indoors and be able to pay staff to support them, which would include drivers and bodyguards. The judge ruled some provisions to the Criminal Code pertaining to prostitution be struck down because they are unconstitutional. As Yahoo! Canada’s Political Points blog reported about in March, this meant, among other things, the ban on bawdy-houses disappeared and the court paved the way for legal brothels.

Bunny Ranch in Ontario? McGuinty “not going there”
Ontario politicians don’t seem enthusiastic about one American business’ expansion plans.
Party leaders reacted today about word Nevada’s famous Moonlite Bunny Ranch brothel is considering expanding in to Toronto, after Ontario’s top court struck down Canada’s brothel and bawdy house laws.
Premier Dalton McGuinty: “We’re not going there. Next question.”
PC leader Tim Hudak: “I don’t know if that’s something the other parties are considering. That argument does exist in some circles, but not in the PC party.”
NDP leader Andrea Horwath: “Well, I mean, that’s certainly wouldn’t be my first way to pursue economic development in Toronto or anywhere else.”
The ranch has been around since the 1950s, and has already expanded into four other sites in Nevada. It’s also looking into setting up in Amsterdam.

Toronto Escorts: Mammoliti wants city’s share of prostitution cash
April 17th, 2012 · No Comments
It’s time for prostitutes and their bordello bosses to split some of their lucrative action with Toronto.
…
“Given the recent decision by the (Ontario Court of Appeal) it is my belief that we need to be ahead of the opening of such establishments in ways of licensing and zoning,” he wrote. “We can do this by implementing an employee tax, specific to the conduct of prostitution.”
…
“It’s certainly not working well with the way it is,” he said. “This is not about bringing prostitution to Toronto because it is already here. This is about controlling it, making it safe, taxing it and licensing it.”
…
Of course, Mammoliti is right about that and he’s also right about getting council to come up with a workable prostitution operating plan. Suddenly, with the court ruling, Mammoliti is not so nuts has his critics charged.
…
The public may reject it outright or one day decide the world’s oldest profession is not going away and that it’s time Toronto benefit from prostitution rather than prostitution solely benefiting from Toronto.

Toronto Escorts: Las Vegas casino-hotel giant MGM Resorts eyes Toronto for billion-dollar …

But Coun. Mike Layton, whose ward includes Ontario Place, is against turning it into a casino resort, concerned about the traffic and potential for crime. He moved a motion that would bar gambling from the site. Another motion asks that no casino be approved without a referendum.
“Am I surprised they’re trying to get ahead of the game?” Layton said of MGM. “No. The casino is the only one who wins here. The house always wins.”
The Ontario government is touting a casino development as a major economic boon with the potential to create 4,000 jobs.
While MGM boosts the idea of a massive gambling centre, another Nevada entrepreneur says Ontario is ready for something else the state is known for – glitzy whorehouses.
Toronto Sun columnist Mike Strobel reports Dennis Hof, owner of Nevada’s notorious Bunny Ranch, thinks Toronto is ready for a its own upscale brothel now that Ontario courts have struck down the province’s bawdy-house law.

Toronto Escorts: Human trafficking convict is wanted
April 17th, 2012 · No Comments
A man who became Canada’s first convicted human trafficker in 2008 for pimping out teenage girls in Mississauga is back on the street and off the grid.
The provincial Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement (ROPE) Squad says Imani Nakpangi, 29, is wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for breaching his parole and as long as he remains at large there is a risk young girls could be forced into sexual slavery.
“There’s definitely a concern he could re-offend,” Det.-Const. Brett Anderson said Tuesday of the offender.
When Nakpangi was arrested in December 2007 at a Mississauga motel, he had a 14-year-old girl turning tricks for him.
Peel police were led to the pimp by an 18-year-old woman who escaped Nakpangi’s grasp after 2 1/2 years of working for him in the flesh trade.

Toronto Escorts: Bunny Ranch facing opposition in Toronto
April 17th, 2012 · No Comments
TORONTO — Political powers see a Bunny Ranch in Toronto as more of a varmint than a fluffy revenue stream.
Councillor Josh Matlow tweeted Tuesday he wouldn’t be supporting a proposal to build a brothel in the city, after the Toronto Sun ran a story about Nevada bordello king Dennis Hof looking to expand to Toronto.
The Bunny Ranch owner’s interest in Toronto was sparked by last month’s Ontario Court of Appeal decision that hookers should be able to hire body guards and work openly in brothels. Rather than advocate immediate implementation of the ruling, the court gave the Canadian government a year to amend the bawdy house provisions of the Criminal Code.
“There are other ways to generate revenue than becoming a pimp,” Matlow said, after he sent out a tweet that read: “What happens in Vegas should stay in Vegas.”

Toronto Escorts: MGM eyes new casino in Toronto
April 17th, 2012 · No Comments
… I would not be surprised if we had interest from companies based in North America or Europe, who have an interest in operating a gambling establishment here in Ontario,” McGuinty said Tuesday, although he added he hadn’t personally had any discussions with MGM about a project.
The premier repeated his position that the province would not go ahead with a casino in any municipality that doesn’t want one.
Toronto Mayor Rob Ford is interested in having a casino in the city but it’s not clear if he can muster the votes at City Hall to get one approved.
MGM is reportedly lobbying councillors but has not put its name down on the provincial lobbyist registry.
The premier also poured cold water on a Bunny Ranch North, after Nevada brothel owner Dennis Hof told QMI Agency he wanted to expand north of the border.

Toronto Escorts: Sex-work ruling sparks trafficking concerns
April 17th, 2012 · No Comments
… I had to give up all my money to them,” Nagy, now 35, said Sunday. “It was very scary. I didn’t speak the language and was far from home. It was Hungarian organized crime. I did it for three and a half months and escaped.”
But other victims might not be as lucky.
With the Court of the Appeal of Ontario sweeping aside some of the country’s anti-prostitution laws last month, activists are concerned the changes will breed more victims of human trafficking.
“Prostitution fuels human trafficking,” said Shae Invidiata, who led a group of a dozen protesters outside of Ontario’s legislature on Saturday. “Legalizing prostitution and living off the avails, you’re giving pimps the legal authority to exploit women and children in Canada.”
The landmark court decision means sex workers will be able to hire drivers and bodyguards and be able to work indoors.
However, exploitation by pimps remains illegal as well as openly soliciting customers on the street.

Toronto Escorts: The Other Side of the Coachella Festival
April 17th, 2012 · No Comments
The next day a booming electric bass signals the start of the concerts by musicians I had never heard of: Jimmy Eat World, the Bloody Beetroots, Plan B, Good Old War, and dozens of others who made me long for the earlier Coachella days when Paul McCartney and yes, even Madonna were the main attraction.
This year I hear that Snoop Dogg is a headliner, a rapper whose street credibility includes his time as a member of L.A’s Crips gang and despite his acquittal on a murder rap in 1996, he’s an alumni of California’s prison system. While he has apparently sold lots of records, it is not his music that keeps him in the media spotlight, but his regular encounters with Johnny Law.
His professional accomplishments include edicts from the United Kingdom and Australia that he is an undesirable. He is also a member of the Nation of Islam, a fan of Louis Farrakhan and self-identifies as a former pimp, altogether the kind of person that right-thinking people would be aghast to see their children emulate.
